Astor Mansions, one of the most iconic Art Deco buildings of central Johannesburg, has been down on its luck lately. And even more so today, when fire broke out on the ground floor.
The cause of the fire in the residential building hasn’t been made known yet, and it apparently only damaged the ground floor, where there was retail space.
The Art Deco beauty on Jeppe and Von Brandis Streets was opened in 1932 and went up to 140 feet, which was the limit in those days. It is across the street from the Jeppe Street Post Office, which was recently changed into flats. With the evacuation of the city in the 1980s, Astor fell into disrepair, although it doesn’t look as bad as its neighbour, Arop House, also once a famous heritage building downtown.
