Eusebius McKaiser’s family to lay formal complaint against AVBOB

Friends and family of the late journalist and broadcaster Eusebius McKaiser have written to funeral company AVBOB, over what they call ‘atrocious handling of McKaiser’s memorial in Johannesburg and his funeral.
The aggrieved parties allege that AVBOB used the funeral of the renown political analyst as a marketing opportunity.

FAMILY AND FRIENDS LABEL AVBOB AS OPPORTUNISTIC
In a statement which is co signed by McKaiser’s husband Nduduzo Nyanda, it says, “Our position is that your company exploits vulnerability and uses it to sell financial services to the living and that you provide either comfort or empathy.”
This was in response to the to an interview AVBOB spokesperson Pieter van der Westhuizen had with CEO Magazine. In the interview Van der Westhuizen says AVBOB provides ’empathetic comforting guidance.
Eusebius passed away in May from an epileptic seizure.

EAVBOB SAYS ALL IT DID WAS ‘STANDARD PRACTICE’
Some of the grievances stated include:
- AVBOB staff erecting marketing material around the memorial service venue.
- Handing out of branded tissue and bottled water and staff allegedly charging mourners.
- McKaizer’s casket lining and tombstone headstone bore the Avbob logo.
- Staff at the funeral were slow to act, and had also not prepared the gravesite correctly and unfortunately the casket could not be held by the incorrectly placed scaffolding and it crashed into the grave.

The family and friends have demanded the following from AVBOB:
- Replace the headstone with a new replica that does not have the AVBOB logo on it;
- 2. Issue a full refund to Nduduzo Nyanda for the costs of the funeral in Makhanda;
- Publish a full apology to Nduduzo Nyanda and the McKaiser/Stevens families where they admit to the mistakes that were made, and commit to better business practices in future, especially when it comes to marketing and branding.
