Spotted yesterday in Palo Alto, California, a Tesla Cybertruck prototype was seen for the first time driving out in the wild wearing camouflage.
When we say in the wild, in California, that means visiting a In-N-Out Burger drive thru. A visit which is apparently “a tradition”, according to a tweet by the South-African born billionaire.
Videos and photos were uploaded on the Tesla Cybertruck Owners Club forum. And what made this occurrence even stranger was the fact that Tesla rarely uses camouflaging on its prototypes. So why now?
CAMOUFLAGE TESLA CYBERTRUCK
Production prototypes usual wear camo to shield updated parts or designs from the prying eyes of the public and media while engineers get on with the business of testing them. Another way is for new technology to first be tested beneath the body of an older test mule (like a Model S or Y), so on-lookers are none the wiser to what’s going on.

The thing is, the all-electric truck has been seen out in public plenty of times before not wearing any such disguise. So, is there something new happening here that Tesla doesn’t want us to know about? We can’t see anything beneath that angular bodywork.
Whatever the reason for this rare venture out, we’ve got to admit that Elon Musk’s Cybertruck does look very cool in its desert camouflage, and perhaps that was the main purpose of this. To generate a bit of buzz around the EV bakkie.

As Elon Musk once tweeted, “it looks like it was made by aliens for the future.” Elon Musk’s tongue-in-cheek comment on the photos – “Good thing we used camo lol” – makes us think it was all just a publicity exercise.
WHEN WILL THE TESLA CYBERTRUCK LAUNCH?
Since it was revealed back in 2019, the start date for production has been a shifting constantly. Back in January 2023, Elon Musk said the start of limited production would be in 2024. However, the billionaire recently updated that by saying it will be available by Q3 of 2023. Let’s wait and see.
Will it come to South Africa? We seriously doubt it, Elon fans, as no Tesla product has made its way to Musk’s country of birth yet … And why would this be any different for the Tesla Cybertruck?
