South African-born billionaire Elon Musk denies the existence of his father Errol Musk’s alleged emerald mine in Zambia and revealed that he and his brother financially support the retired engineer — via a tweet on Sunday 7 May.
ELON MUSK DENIES THE EXISTENCE OF FATHER’S EMERALD MINE
There has been a lot of conversation surrounding the upbringing of Pretoria-born billionaire Elon Musk. His father, Errol Musk told Business Insider that they were wealthy and he had an emerald mine in Zambia.
However, Musk denied this several times. The Tesla and SpaceX founder took to Twitter on 7 May to set the record straight in a lengthy Instagram post. He revealed that he grew up in a lower to middle-class income situation.
Musk stated that his father owned a small engineering company that was successful for 20-30 years but he has been bankrupt for 25 years. He went on to say that he and his brother Kimbal have been financially supporting his father — retired engineer Errol Musk. According to the tweet, Elon and Kimbal financially supported their father on the condition that he does not engage in bad behaviour, but unfortunately, he did.
However, he said that they continued to support him because there were small children involved. Errol has two children with his stepdaughter Jana Bezuidenhout. He also has two children with her mother, Heide Bezuidenhout.
Musk also denies that the emerald mine actually exists saying that they have never seen it and there have been no records of its existence. Take a look…
“Regarding the so-called “emerald mine”, there is no objective evidence whatsoever that this mine ever existed. He told me that he owned a share in a mine in Zambia, and I believed him for a while, but nobody has ever seen the mine, nor are there any records of its existence,” he tweeted.

NOT THE FIRST TIME THE BILLIONAIRE DENIED EMERALD MINE
This comes months after Maye Musk, the mom of Elon and Kimbal, took to Twitter to claim that they lived in a “rent-controlled” apartment. The model shared a screenshot from an interview in 1998, she then questioned the emerald mine and “wealthy parents”.
The billionaire’s father Errol Musk was a South African engineer.
“Found this @CBSNews @elonmusk interview from 1998. I didn’t know about the emerald mine and wealthy parents until I read it on @Twitter about ten years ago. So, why did we live in a rent controlled apartment? #FUD,” she wrote.
Musk then tweeted that the “fake emerald mine thing” is “so annoying”. Take a look…
“The fake emerald mine thing is so annoying (sigh). Like where exactly is this thing anyway!?” he tweeted.
Business Insider previously reported that Musk’s family once owned an emerald mine in Zambia.

WHAT ABOUT ELON’S EX-GIRLFRIEND’S EMERALD NECKLACE?
Despite the billionaire denying that his family owned an emerald mine, his ex-girlfriend claimed she had a necklace with an emerald from his father’s mine.
Jennifer Gwynne, who dated the billionaire when they were both studying at the University of Pennsylvania – was selling photos and mementos from her relationship with the billionaire.
One of the other items being auctioned is a necklace that the billionaire gave to his then-girlfriend. Gwynne revealed that the gold necklace includes an emerald from the emerald mine the Tesla CEO’s father used to have half-shares in.
“When we went to visit Elon’s mother in Toronto during the Christmas break of 1994, Elon gave me both the small ‘love, love, love’ note and the necklace,” she said in RR’s statement according to CNN.
“His mom had a number of these necklaces in a case in her bedroom, and Elon told me they were from his father’s emerald mine in South Africa (sic) — he pulled one from the case. And because I had not gotten him anything as a Christmas gift (and I felt very guilty about that), he said we would consider the necklace an early birthday present for me,” she continued.
