Twelve venues across all nine provinces turned a sea of red today as Cosatu embarked on a national day of actions with marches around the country.

Some of the pertinent issues raised was the high unemployment rate, cost of living and for companions to pay workers a decent salary.

PROTESTORS IN JOHANESBURG DEMANDED TO BE ADDRESSED BY LESUFI

In Johannesburg, protesters marched to the Human Rights Commission, the Department of Labour and the offices of Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi.

The memorandum handed to SAHRC focuses on the recent cholera outbreak, with Cosatu saying that the human right of people in Hammanskraal have been violated.

Their list of demands include:

  • That the SAHRC must investigate the sequence of events regarding water supply in Hammanskraal
  • All negligent state State institutions be brought to book.
  • Law enforcement should must speed up investigations.
  • The Commission should consider human rights consequence management.

WORKERS DEMAND DECENT PAY

The workers meanwhile demanded the following:

  • Speedy prosecution of high profile public and private sector cases as a matter of national priority.
  • A plan to implement the International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention 190 on violence and sexual harassment in the workplace.
  • The elimination of gender pay gap
  • Immediate declaration and enforcement of a national moratorium on retrenchment and job losses
  • That government must force all employees  to adhere to the Labour Relations Act bargaining protocols and outcomes to protects worker’s wages and rights.

“It is imperative that strike adherence to these regulations is ensured by all employees. Failure to do so undermines fair employment practices but also poses” the memorandum states.
