The City of Cape Town continues to grapple with the weather impacts of the severe rainfall that hit the metro on Wednesday and Thursday.
CAPE TOWN RESPONSE TO WEATHER-RELATED INCIDENTS
In an update on Thursday, 15 June, the City reported a number of incidents including mudslides, river overflow, and extensive flooding in various areas.
Efforts to alleviate the flooding continue, with a focus on unblocking stormwater systems that have become overwhelmed.

Mudslides occurred in the Oudeskip area of Hangberg, Hout Bay. The Eerste River/Kuils River burst its banks, resulting in flooding properties in Zandvlei, Macassar.
The Mosselbank River also burst its banks – affecting Philadelphia and Klipheuwel residents. “The Keyser River is a concern as it bursts its banks again. The City‘s Roads and Infrastructure Management Services are assisting to divert water from surrounding properties,” said Cape Town Disaster Risk Management Centre spokesperson Charlotte Powell.

Numerous reports have been of uprooted trees and flooded roads across the City.

FRANSCHHOEK PASS SHUT
Meanwhile, the Franschhoek Pass (R45) and R321 in the Cape Winelands have been closed due to rockfalls. The Overberg District Municipality said traffic services were diverting traffic to alternative routes.

An Orange Level 6 warning for disruptive rain in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands is effective until midnight on Thursday. The downpours are the result of a series of cold fronts affecting the Cape provinces this week.
