HOW DOES IT WORK?

Two types of tests are used for dog allergy testing: serological blood test and intradermal skin testing.

Both tests measure the presence of IgE antibodies in the dog’s body.

IgE refers to immunoglobulin E, which is produced in response to allergens.

Excessive IgE production occurs when a dog is allergic to a substance.

The antibodies trigger the release of chemicals that cause adverse reactions.

The tests detect the presence of allergen-specific IgE in the skin or blood, indicating an allergic reaction.

WHAT ALLERGY TEST IS BEST?

Both serological blood testing and intradermal skin testing are valuable methods for allergy testing in dogs.

In many cases, the results of both tests are similar, but some dogs may respond differently to each test.

The effectiveness of the tests may vary depending on the individual dog.

It is difficult to predict which test will be more suitable for a specific dog without conducting the tests.

It’s important to note that no allergy test is perfect.

If food allergies are suspected, a food elimination diet is recommended over blood or skin testing.

All dogs, regardless of breed, can develop allergies, and they can occur at any stage of life.

Certain breeds, such as:

  • West Highland White Terriers
  • French Bulldogs
  • Shar Peis
  • Golden Retrievers
  • Labrador Retrievers
  • Shih Tzus
  • Boxers,

are mostly affected by allergies.

However, it’s important to note that allergies can occur in any dog, regardless of breed or lineage.
