Al Jama-ah’s Kabelo Gwamanda has been elected the new mayor of Johannesburg, beating ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni and DA’s Mpho Phalatse.

Kabelo Gwamanda is the new mayor of the City of Joburg.

He beat ActionSA’s Funzi Ngobeni and Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Mpho Phalatse by 139 to 59 and 68 votes respectively.

METROPOLITAN MUNICIPALITY HELD A SPECIAL MEETING TO ELECT A NEW MAYOR

This comes after the metropolitan municipality held a special meeting in the City of Joburg Council Chamber on Friday, 5 May 2023 to vote for a new mayor.

Gwamanda is a member of the Al Jama-ah party.

GWMANDA RECEIVED BACKING FROM ANC, EFF, AND MINORITY PARTIES

He received the backing of the ANC, EFF, and minority parties.

He succeeds Thapelo Amad, who is also a member of Al Jama-ah.

Amad resigned a few weeks ago.

The South African previously reported that Amad’s resignation was due to the direct and ongoing pressure from ActionSA. He did not resign voluntarily as mentioned in his resignation address, said Funzi Ngobeni, the party’s CoJ Caucus Leader.
