The Malawian pastor Shepherd Bushiri and his wife, who were arrested last week in connection with allegations of fraud totalling R102 million, will spend a second weekend in jail pending a bail hearing next week.

The National Prosecuting Authority said this in a short statement today. Also locked up are their co-accused. Earlier this week Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that Bushiri and his wife were in South Africa illegally.

The Bushiris were arrested on 20 October along with another couple, named by the police at the time as Willah and Zethu Mudolo. Bushiri’s non-denominational evangelical church Enlightened Christian Gathering is based in Pretoria, and supporters have gathered outside court this week demanding his release. Bushiri was meant to lead a televised prayer meeting tomorrow (see below), but will be in jail.
