It’s safe to say South Africans, in general, have had enough with load shedding and power outages.

Residents of Buccleuch are so fed up, they staged a protest outside Eskom’s headquarters in Sunninghill, Johannesburg and dropped their rotten food.

The residents, which marched on Friday, 19 May 2023, claimed they hadn’t had electricity since Sunday and demanded the embattled power utility take the necessary steps to restore their power. Buccleuch wasn’t the only area affected by the power outages as residents in Waterfall had also had electricity interrupted for a number of days.

Several clips of angry Buccleuch residents dumping meat outside Eskom’s offices have gone viral on social media, including one shared by Gauteng radio station Kaya FM.

WILL LOAD SHEDDING END THIS YEAR?

ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has said load shedding will be a thing of the past by the end of 2023.

Instead of relief, many South Africans, who have heard such proclamations about the situation ending and power outages before, are not buying it.

Speaking on eNCA, Mbalula said he had seen some of the work being done by government in an effort to end the current power crisis and is confident it will be done away with. South Africans have had to put up with Stage 6 load shedding and have been warned the coming winter will be a difficult one for the grid, which means they could be in for more hours in the dark.

“I can assure you that load shedding will be reversed, and it will be dealt with decisively,” said Mbalula.

There have been growing concerns about the future of South Africa’s economy, should the crisis continue.
