Two South African u19 boys and girls canoe polo teams are preparing to fly to Northern Ireland where they will compete in the Junior International Canoe Polo Championships next week.

It’s an exciting competition for the youngsters – who are all still in school and have an average age of 16.

“This tour is a vital step in the squads’ preparation for the 2020 World Championships in Rome,” Canoe Polo SA media manager Don Wewege told SAPeople.

Only two of the players have ever travelled with the national squad before (both on Canoe Polo SA’s trip to Belgium last year). For the rest of the squad this will be their first time, says Wewege.

Both teams are aiming for top 10 placings.

The venue for the tournament is flatwater reservoir in Carryduff, Belfast. The event runs from 31 July to 4 August.

Any South Africa expats in the area are invited to come along. The teams “would love to have some fellow Saffas supporting,” says Wewege.
