The answer: Both men were wrongly identified in pretty crazy ways – and it came to light on social media on the very same day.

Last month, on 4 February, it was pointed out on Twitter that the Democratic Alliance’s Mmusi Maimane was identified on an SABC news report as none other than ANC leader, President Jacob Zuma.

South Africa-born billionaire businessman Elon Musk, meanwhile, had his face plastered over a billboard in Brazil, and he was identified as a civil policeman.

Musk, after the mistake was pointed out to him, had some good fun himself on Twitter – where he is followed by more than 3.5 million people – saying “My job moonlighting as a police officer in Brazil is no longer secret” and then linked to a story about it.

The public relations company responsible for the gaffe posted a letter of apology on Musk’s Twitter page. It said, “We are all able to commit mistakes, but the most important is to learn from the mistakes and change. Unfortunately this action is generating many negative actions on our Facebook page, so we found as the best solution the immediate retraction and interdict outdoors.”
