The video of a crazy wonderful British adventurer in South Africa has gone viral… and it’s not surprising when you see why – the adventurer, Tom Morgan (38) from Bristol, used 100 helium balloons to hoist himself 4,238m into the air and fly 25km across an area north of Johannesburg!
It turns out, if you fancy balloon-travelling – whilst strapped to a camping chair – then South Africa is a pretty good location. The original plan had been to fly in Botswana… but the balloons kept popping.
The BBC likened the scene to Pixar’s hit movie ‘Up’… when the house floated into the air with balloons.
Tom apparently spent two days inflating the balloons, and had just enough helium – after the failed Botswana attempts – to try one more time when he moved with his team to South Africa.
Tom described the trip as “magical… unbelievably cool” and said that as he started to float up, up and away, he was both “terrified and elated”. It got a little more terrifying the higher he rose… apparently as he drifted towards the atmosphere’s inversion layer, the flight sped up and he “had to keep my cool and start gradually cutting the balloons”.
The Adventurists says they’re “fighting to make the world less boring”. Um, mission accomplished!
