For all those who missed Akani Simbine’s brilliant win in the 100m race at the Gyulai István Memorial in Budapest yesterday, the South African athlete has uploaded a video of the race. (Watch below.)
Writing on Facebook, Simbine said: “Unfortunately, my races were not televised. Here is a video of the 100m race from yesterday. Thank you for the overwhelming support and encouragement. It means the world to me.”
As can be seen in the video below, all eyes – and TV cameras – in Hungary were on Jamaica’s Asafa Powell who was expected to win the race… but South Africa’s fastest man in the 100m beat him by 0.03 seconds.
Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula proudly tweeted: “Akani Simbine set a new national record after winning the 100m event in 9.89 seconds in Budapest.”
Simbine, who will be representing South Africa at the Rio Olympics next month, also won gold in the Men’s 200m race a few hours later… which may prompt the SA Olympic selectors to revisit their decision to exclude him from that event in Rio.
Last week Simbine said he was “so honoured and excited to be named in the team that is going to represent South Africa at the Olympic Games. It’s no longer just a dream but now my reality. #teamsarise ??????.”
