WATCH South African Firefighters Honour Mandela Day in Canada

South African firefighters from Working on Fire (WoF) have yet again inspired the locals in Canada with their song and dance routine. Watch below.

Alberta Wildfire in Canada posted a video of the South African crew dancing and singing on Mandela Day (18 July), and said: “Today is #MandelaDay2019, when the legacy of Nelson Mandela is honoured through community service. The South African firefighters assisting #ABwildfire in High Level will be volunteering locally tonight after their work on the Chuckegg Creek wildfire.”

Many Canadian residents who viewed the footage said they were awestruck and had goosebumps watching the men’s joy and enthusiasm. Some asked when the team would be performing on stage.

One Alberta resident said: “Love this! Thanks for sharing. My 3.5 year old loved watching it too and asked tons of questions (some that I couldn’t answer) but learning of different cultures is what she likes.”

Another said: “It is so awesome to see communities come together from far and wide. God bless you all. ??” (During downtime the teams from different parts of the world have had fun competing with in Anthem-singing and getting to know one another.)

Many Canadians thanked the firefighters for helping the region with its wildfires “and taking the time to volunteer… Truly so touching and inspiring. ❤️”

WoF said they honoured Mandela Day by helping to clean up a local retiree’s farm. It was “a gesture that was much appreciated”, said WoF.

The WoF team has been assisting with firefighting operations in Alberta, Canada for most of the month. (Today they have just been withdrawn because of weather conditions – temperatures of up to 31°C – worsening the fire.)

A South African expat who saw the video said: “Sommer makes me home.”
