Contestants from nine countries – including South Africa – are competing in a solar challenge car race from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
The 3,000 mile South Africa Solar Challenge features solar powered vehicles that have been designed and built by students from South Africa, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and China.
Tshwane University student Bongani Malebele told Reuter’s reporter Serena Chaudhry: “The solar car is something that looks futuristic. So, who wouldn’t want to be part of a team that is dealing with something that would sort of solve a problem such as fuel in future… because we want to see us having solar cars just that you drive wherever you want to without having to spend money for fuel.”
The race – which experienced some delays on Heritage Day because of stormy weather in the Eastern Cape – takes competitors through 18 towns over 8 days driving along highways and roads like any other car.
According to Reuters, the race participants say they have a clear message – to raise awareness about advances in solar energy and inspire countries around the world to make more use of green technology.
