Award-winning bass-baritone Simon Shibambu filled South Africans with pride on Saturday night as he performed the South African national anthem, Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika, at Twickenham in London, ahead of the England vs South Africa match… and sang with his whole heart.
SAPeople contributor Ronel van Zyl, who has been following Simon’s burgeoning career, said: “Just beautiful. Such a proud moment. I wiped away a tear.” Judy Jarvis tweeted: “What a brilliant rendering of the best anthem in the world from Simon Shibambu this evening : Go #Springboks”.
And the Springboks certainly did go for it… beating England 27-13 on their home soil.
Several of Simon’s friends and fans congratulated him on Facebook, with Adèle Venter summing up the feelings of many with: “For once – a great singer for SA at Twickenham! Well done for doing our National anthem justice. You did our country proud.”
Simon posted a photo of himself singing the anthem, and said simply: “Anthem, Twickenham London”.
