President Jacob Zuma’s birthday celebrations are underway in South Africa… and although thousands marched to the Union Building in Pretoria today to call for the 75-year-old to step down as leader of the country, there’s apparently still a lot of love for the man his staunch supporters call by his clan name, Msholozi… as can be seen in some of the videos below. (Watch live at bottom.)
Thousands of JZ’s fans and supporters have turned up at his birthday bash in Soweto, packed into a tent that organisers say can accommodate a crowd of 10,000… although Jessie Duarte, ANC Deputy Secretary General, is the only ANC official from the top six in attendance. The others are noticeably absent.
The birthday celebrations are reportedly costing R8-million!
Meanwhile Zuma detractors have made a point of wishing other South Africans a very happy birthday today… from swimmer Chad le Clos, cricketer Johann Louw, to football star Lucas Radebe… and not forgetting Zuma’s nemesis, the popular Finance Minister he fired a couple of weeks ago – Pravin Gordhan, who turns 68 today.
A facebook page, set up to support Gordhan – Hands OFF Pravin Gordhan – posted the following photo and heartfelt message:
“Mr. Gordhan, when we sought liberty, you were there. When we needed to build strong and credible institutions of government, you were there. When we needed someone to step into the breach, you were there. Right now we need your integrity and ethical leadership more than ever. Stand strong, you are not alone, you have SA as your crutch! Happy Birthday Pravin! May you have many, many more.”
On Twitter…
