If you missed it, here’s the message that DA Leader Mmusi Maimane delivered to President Cyril Ramaphosa in Parliament earlier today: “Mr Ramaphosa, we wish you well, but know that we will hold you accountable!”

Ramaphosa’s Response:

Ramaphosa said that in his tradition when a young man becomes a man, he is given “almost instructions”… and what the opposition leaders had been saying to him in Parliament was similar to that – with advice, suggestions, and “some have even offered threats”. He said many though had spoken about unity, patriotism and how they can all work together to improve the lives of “our people”.

Of Maimane’s message, he described them as “wonderful words” but that then Maimane “almost soils them by saying ‘I’m going to see you in 2019’. I think he’s running ahead of himself.”

He then turned to Maimane and said: “I’m going to be seeing you regularly here in this house on an ongoing basis”, before chastising him slightly with a request to “focus on now, rather than the future and grandstanding”.

Speaking to all the leaders Ramaphosa said his aim is to lift the level of debate in Parliament “where we really begin to engage on national issues without screaming at each other”. He said he’d like there to be less disorder, and debate without words like ‘on a point of order’.

Ramaphosa said: “I do believe when one is elected in this type of position you basically become a servant of the people of South Africa… I will seek to execute this position with humility, faithfulness and with dignity as well. That is what I will seek to do.”

He spoke of mutual respect underpinning everything the leaders do in the House. His speech centred around reconciliation and Ramaphosa said he will “seek to work with all political parties” and that “I will work very hard not to disappoint the people of South Africa”.

As the House rose to give him a standing ovation, Maimane crossed the floor to congratulate and embrace the new South African President.

However, Maimane is still not a huge Ramaphosa fan, as can be seen in this comment the DA Leader wrote on Facebook on Thursday afternoon:

“Cyril Ramaphosa has stood in Jacob Zuma’s shadow for years, silent in the face of his crimes and the crimes of fellow ANC comrades. His election means that the corrupt system that is oppressing South Africans will continue. He has shown no willingness or ability to fight corruption and State Capture.”
