Neuhoff, of Neuhoff Farms in Delmas, has donated approximately R500,000 worth of feed to the farmers who are suffering one of the most devastating droughts in 100 years, said Agri SA.

The convoy, which is headed for Beaufort West, will be joined by a group of motorcyclists along the route through Gauteng.

This isn’t the first time Neuhoff has been so generous.

Agri SA said that he previously donated large quantities of feed to farmers in North West. Agri North West is now helping with arrangements to get his latest donation to farmers in the Western Cape.

“We hope to encourage people to assist farmers,” says Boeta du Toit, chief executive of Agri North West. “Farmers in the summer rainfall areas are very willing to assist those in the Cape who are not expecting any rain until winter. We have this feed, so the only obstacle is transportation.

“We call on people to open their hearts and wallets. Any donations, such as stock feed, diesel and financial assistance to transport the feed, are welcome.” (See details below.)

Agri SA says the drought in the Western Cape doesn’t just hurt or cause suffering; it kills. According to Carl Opperman, chief executive of Agri Western Cape, an economic disaster is unfolding in the Western Cape.

“The Central Karoo and the West Coast district have been declared disaster areas,” says Opperman. “In fact, it is the first time that the entire Western Cape has been declared a disaster zone. Besides the drought, many areas are experiencing extreme water scarcity. We are very grateful to receive this donation.”

Opperman says agriculture plays a central role in maintaining stability, especially in rural areas.

“Members of the agricultural community support one another. We sent stock feed to North West when they needed it and now they are helping with arrangements to support us,” says Opperman.

Christo van der Rheede, deputy chief executive of Agri SA, says the organisation has already spent R17 million on drought relief since last year.

“However, the crisis persists and – despite limited resources – we will continue to assist farmers,” he says. “We call on all citizens of South Africa to donate to Agri SA’s drought relief fund.” (See details below.)
