WATCH Houtbay’s Popular Beach Hero and Treasure Hunter David Becket

An awesome South African – David Becket – who is loved by his community in the Western Cape for his hard work and dedication to keeping Houtbay beach clean, has been honoured in a special video.

Green Renaissance, who produced the film, said: “David is our hero. For the last two years, every single day without fail, without any financial reward, he has dedicated his time to keeping his local beach clean.”

He hasn’t missed a single day, not even when those strong winds blow or the rains fall. The beach feels like home to him.

SAPeople contributor Lee Peacock says: “He is a legend to us here in Hout Bay.”

David’s collected over 506 bags of rubbish, including straws, lighters and almost 20,000 bottle tops.

In the video David reveals that during his treasure hunting, he’s also helped find someone’s wedding ring… and that he hopes one day he will find his own dream partner.

After watching the video, David said on Facebook: “Wow my video Interview made me emotional but so proud of my hard work and Dedication for David’s Houtbay Beach clean up…”

He also thanked Costa Rican lawyer and diplomat Carolina Sevilla, for inspiring him to get involved in beach clean up with her mission to clean up the ocean’s plastic pollution.

David says the most painful experience in his life has been losing his grandmother who taught him to be kind to people “and they’ll be kind to you”.

Local resident Penny Jane Elliott said: “David, I miss my gran too ? Thank you for the glorious contribution to the world by just being exactly who you are. ?????”
