WATCH Hippo Crossing Busy Road! (Why Foreigners Believe Wild Animals Roam Our Streets)

We can’t blame foreigners for believing wild animals roam our streets when… um, wild animals do roam our streets! Here’s a hippo crossing the road in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa earlier today.

Traffic came to a standstill to allow the hippo to wander across the road.

NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) said “some days our rescue crew have to negotiate traffic on the way to the rescue base. At lunchtime today in Richards Bay the route to the base had traffic of a different sort!”

The video of the hippo was filmed by Lynne Henderson at Mzingazi Bridge.

Local resident Brynn Gericke told SAPeople: “Hippos are a normal occurrence in Richards Bay, and we had one – named Huberta – as a mascot for a while. If on their own it’s usually a male escaping older males in the herd. It’s not common to see them feeding in the day.”

She presumes it wandered off on its own accord as there’s water to the left and lush bush and water to the right… “but it would have to cross the road either way”.

Brynn cautions tourists that hippos can be very aggressive. “One attacked a bakkie just over a year ago, unprovoked… ”
