She also became the first woman in 30 years – since Frith van der Merwe in 1989 – to win both the Comrades and Two Oceans.
Today celebrated South Africa’s 94th legendary 89km Comrades Marathon.
New winner Mothibi, who reportedly came fourth last year, said:
I am very happy, I am excited. All I have to say is, thank you to the people who have supported me through thick and thin.
Mothibi won the race in 5:31:33, with Mthembu in second place with 5:31:58.
Steyn too was grateful for her win, saying:
I feel so blessed; I cannot believe that this dream came true for me today. It’s all thanks to God because today I had strength that I don’t know where it came from.
