Watch below as South African free solo rock climber Matt Bush ascends iconic SA rock faces – from Cape Town’s Lion’s Head to Paarl Rock, one of the hugest granite domes in the world.
The nerve-wracking action was filmed by Western Cape photographer and videographer, Luke Maximo Bell.
Luke has been filming Matt over the past few years at different times. “Basically Matt does these incredible climbs with no ropes, so it’s pretty amazing!” he said.
His own job’s a little stressful, controlling the drones as they hover close to the rock edge… “but not so much nowadays because the drones have sensors to stop collisions which is really nice”, Luke told SAPeople.
Matt says on Instagram that sometimes when climbing he can hear the drones buzzing behind him. He says it’s a “surreal experience to be up there alone. As if in a dream. My focus sharpened to the necessity of the moment. The past and future did not exist up there only the now.”
