Despite the heavy rains in parts of South Africa resulting in flooded roads and fields, it appears that most South Africans are rejoicing in the much needed surplus water and embracing the rains – which have incredibly filled the Vaal Dam to over 70% – with gratitude and humour!
In the video below, supplied by Ria Viljoen, a farmer can be seen checking out his mielie fields in a novel manner! Ria said: “I HAVE to share the humour of our grateful farmers for the lovely rain in many places in SA. I have no idea who the friendly farmer is or who the videographer is. I have just received it on a WhatsApp message… but it is an unspeakable joy and full of glory.” (Update: According to MaroelaMedia the farmer is Jan Christoffel Bezuidenhuit, 35, on Genadendal Farm outside Wesselsbron in the Free State.)
The current rains have brought much needed relief to Gauteng which has been gripped by a long drought, said the Department Of Water and Sanitation (DWS).
DWS spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says the Vaal Dam level rose from about 64% on Monday to 72.27% on Wednesday, with its sharpest increase being in the past day. According to Gauteng Weather, the Vaal Dam received the volume of almost one Olympic-sized swimming pool EVERY SECOND over the past 24 hours!
However, despite the increase, Ratau stresses that much more is still needed as the province will soon be entering its dry winter season.
Floods caused havoc in Ekurhuleni where blocked drains meant the R24 West outside Eastgate Shopping Mall in Bedfordview had to be closed for almost 24 hours.
The South African Weather Service has issued a warning with more flooding expected in parts of Limpopo tomorrow.
DWS is calling on members of the public to exercise caution when approaching low level bridges and to stay away from flooding rivers.
