Life cannot just be about solving one sad problem after another… So says South African born and raised billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk.
Musk, who currently lives in the USA, and inspires the world with his electric cars (Tesla) and mission to populate Mars, says of his latest venture – sending a rocket with a Tesla Roadster that’s ‘Falcon Heavy’ and passenger Starman into space: “There need to be things that inspire you, that make you glad to wake up in the morning and be part of humanity. That is why we did it. We did it for you.”
And then he posted this very cool video:
WATCH Falcon Heavy & Starman
Watch Westworld creator Jonathan Nolan’s video capturing the historic launch of the SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket…
Musk’s company SpaceX says that: “When Falcon Heavy lifted off, it became the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. With the ability to lift into orbit nearly 64 metric tons (141,000 lb)—a mass greater than a 737 jetliner loaded with passengers, crew, luggage and fuel–Falcon Heavy can lift more than twice the payload of the next closest operational vehicle, the Delta IV Heavy, at one-third the cost.
“Following lift-off, the two side boosters separated from the center core and returned to landing site for future reuse.
“Falcon Heavy put a Tesla Roadster and its passenger, Starman, into orbit around the sun. At max velocity Starman and the Roadster will travel 11 km/s (7mi/s) and travel 400 million km (250 million mi) from Earth.”
In an interview earlier this week, Elon said he has gone through TONS of failures to get where he is. He said the hardest time in his life was in 2008 when he almost declared bankruptcy, and got divorced. He said he had ‘just’ 30 or 40 million dollars left and had to choose between using the money to save one of his companies, or both (but the latter would mean less money for each and therefore risking losing both). Since both were like ‘children’ to him, he took the gamble to split the money and try to save both… Fortunately he won!
Elon was joined on stage by his brother Kimbal (with guitar, and a little ditty at the end) who remembered how even as youngsters on a roadtrip these South African expats used to find if the conversation wasn’t about trying to solve world problems, they weren’t interested!
