WATCH Don’t Miss South Africa’s Spectacular Sardine Run

Each year between May and July South Africa offers tourists a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view “one of the planet’s most spectacular and mysterious marine events” – the famous Sardine Run!

South African Tourism has compiled a fantastic video – with footage from Sardine Run PE – inviting holiday makers from the UK to visit South Africa’s shores before the end of July to witness the unexplained phenomenon for themselves.

Millions of sardines make the annual pilgrimage from the cold Cape waters to the warm Durban waters between May and the end of July. The shoals are estimated to be 15km long, 4km wide and 40m deep… although in recent years it has been unpredictable, and in the last couple of years stocks drastically plummeted, prompting Carte Blanche to do an investigation after fishermen netted almost nothing. Fortunately it seems this year is another good year. A couple of weeks ago, SA Tourism joyfully announced: “The sardines are here! ? ? ?”
