As predicted, an intense cold front has arrived in the Western Cape of South Africa today, Sunday 1 July 2018, bringing what many described as “hectic” rains and some localised flooding. The rain is welcomed in a region that has been suffering one of its worst droughts in a century (although residents who can afford to help, are asked to spare a thought for those in the townships for whom the rain means leaking roofs, wet blankets and disaster).

SAPeople contributor Ronald Collins reported “floods in Blouberg, including my garden” and much of the Cape Peninsula is said to have been flooded.

In the city, many storm drains weren’t able to handle the sudden downpour (as can be seen in other cities when there is such a rush of water), as seen in this video by Andrew Norris:

This late afternoon, up to 50cm of snow is expected on the mountain peaks in the region.

Snow Report SA says that by Monday morning there will be “widespread snow across all the mountain ranges of the Western Cape, with some heavy falls in places”.

At the moment up to 8cm of snow is forecast for Table Mountain! Up to 40 cm is expected on Matroosberg and Cedarberg, and 50 cm on Wellington Sneeukop 50cm.

Snow Report says the Northern Cape will also be getting snow from late tonight and through to tomorrow morning, while Sutherland could get snow most of Monday.

Latest predictions show less snow likely for the Eastern Cape, with only up to 5cm expected. There is no snow predicted for KwaZulu-Natal or any other provinces at this stage.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) warns that as the cold front passes over the Cape, “please pay special attention to hazardous weather that may be affecting your area. Keep warm and be careful on the roads.”
