On Sunday evening Carte Blanche paid tribute to legendary musician, songwriter and activist Johnny Clegg.
Best known for some of his iconic hits such as ‘Impi’ and ‘Asimbonanga’ – a song paying homage to Nelson Mandela and other struggle stalwarts of his time – the man fondly known as the ‘White Zulu’ succumbed to pancreatic cancer last week.
The tribute shows previous Carte Blanche interviews with Clegg – in which he reveals how ‘Scatterlings of Africa’ and a British independent record company changed everything. At the time – 1983 – he was a lecturer at Wits University. He said when he asked his professor for a “sabbatical”, the prof said “once you walk out that door you’ll never be back”.
He was right. Clegg went on to make fans around the country and the world.
Of in the incredible moment when Nelson Mandela joined him on stage in Frankfurt, Germany, as he was performing Asimbonanga, Clegg said it was a total surprise. “I was… I was floored!” He said that was the pinnacle of his songwriting career – “that song and that moment – to have it validated by the man I wrote it for. It was just the universe making these 2 things happen…”
