Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary has posted the most precious video of a white rhino, Olive, giving birth on Thursday morning… and delivering hope for the species.
So far, over 4 million people have watched the short 37 second video. Last night the sanctuary posted a longer 8’42” video that shows the entire birth, and the wonderful, caring moments afterwards between the 9-year-old rhino cow and her newborn male calf. WATCH BELOW.
The Sanctuary said it was “extremely humbled and privileged to be able to share this incredible footage”.
They said: “For the first time, the birth was captured on video by Olive’s guard. Despite keeping his distance, Olive remained close to her long term protector throughout the early stages of labour and kept him close during delivery. This is an unbelievably special moment to see this precious new life take his first breaths. By the grace of God, we welcome this miracle to the world.”
The baby was born at 07:50 on Thursday morning. Olive’s guard can be heard softly encouraging Olive to ‘push’.
Olive herself was orphaned in 2013 after poachers killed her mother. (Watch award-winning South African documentary STROOP: Journey into the Rhino Horn War, currently available on Showmax in SA and overseas – in most countries – for insight into the horrific rhino poaching.)
Olive was just 10 months old when she was rescued and brought to Care for Wild.
The Sanctuary said “Olive was one of the first rhinos to complete her rehabilitation program and enter the re-wilding and release program. Her little son has become the third calf born to two orphans of poaching making Storm a father for the third time. Another light, another sign of hope for the species.”
