WATCH The 2-Step Race That Explains A Lot About Privilege

South Africans have been sharing an American video that’s gone viral and attracted the attention of international celebrities like talk show hosts James Corden and Ellen de Generes, and actor Ashton Kuchter.

The video depicts the ‘privilege walk’, a technique used around the world to teach students and others about the advantages some of us have just because of the circumstances under which we’re born and have no control – like race, gender, financial stability and sexual orientation.

This particular session was with a group of students on a Christian program with Link Year. The organisation’s founder, Adam Donyes, tells the students to line up in order to race for a $100 bill. He then tells them to take two steps forward if certain statements apply to them – like growing up with a father figure in their home, having access to private education, or never wondering where their next meal would come from

The point of the video is not to make those who have privilege feel bad about it… but to help them acknowledge it and try to change things, and help others in the race for life.

The video’s purpose is to stimulate communication and conversation.

As one social media user said: “If you’ve been afforded privilege of ANY kind, put your hand out for those who haven’t and help them up. Be humble. Be mindful.”
