The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Warning of heavy rain, leading to localised flooding, expected in places over the Cape Metropole and other parts of the Western Cape on Monday 28 May 2018.
SAWS issued the warning for between 08h00 on Monday and 00h00 on Tuesday 29 May.
The Weather Service predicted heavy rain will fall over Cape Town and western parts of the Cape Winelands, as well as western parts of the Overberg District.
The cold front is expected to make landfall by Monday early afternoon in the south-western Cape.
Good rainfall amounts are predicted – from 15-30mm, and up to 50mm in mountainous areas.
Storm Report SA reminded Capetonians to “keep those water buckets and JOJO tanks ready!”. The storm report page said the approaching cold front is the exact type that South Africa needs “as they penetrate deeper into the country”.
The recent rainfall in Cape Town has already started making a difference to dams. Alex de Kock posted this collage of three photos showing Theewaterskloof Dam, which supplies most of the Mother City’s drinking water, starting to slowly fill up again.
Alex said: “Things are starting to look promising and improving…”
P.S. If you’re in the Cape Town area, and it looks like it’s going to pour – please spare a thought for those living in townships whose shacks are likely to leak. Any spare sheets of plastic, spare blankets or any similar kind gesture would be warmly received. Thank you.
