Victoria Beckham Jets into SA for BornFreeAfrica

Popstar, fashion designer and wife to one of the planet’s hottest football players, Victoria Beckham jetted in to Cape Town today.

She’s in South Africa to support the Born Free Africa initiative, which is meeting in the Mother City this week to highlight “South Africa’s progress toward elimination of mother to child transmission of HIV”, according to their Twitter page.

Victoria herself tweeted just before boarding the flight that she was “looking forward to meeting @bornfreeafrica in Cape Town to support the initiative to end mother to child HIV transmission”.

The mother of four – Brooklyn, 14; Romeo, 11; Cruz, 8 and Harper, 2 –  is one of an elite group of 23 top female fashionistas  who are lending their support to Born Free. Others include Donna Karan, Donatella Versace and Miuccia Prada.

The campaign was started by APAX Partners CEO John Megrue, and is headed by Diane von Furstenburg, Vogue’s Anna Wintour, Ethiopian model and designer Liya Kebede, and Brazilian supermodel  Gisele Bundchen.

Born Free Africa is a private-sector-led initiative, launched in November 2013, which has the sole objective of ending mother-to-child transmission of HIV by December 31, 2015. (You can watch the countdown on their website, down to the last second!)

According to the BornFreeAfrica website:

The world has experienced more than a 50% decline in new HIV infections in children since 2003, BUT…

• more than 700 children are still born with HIV EACH day
• 98% of cases are totally preventable
• the solution is just one pill per day
• 260,000 children were infected in 2012
