A few days ago ‘The Australian’, a nationwide newspaper in Australia, shared a compilation of stunning aerial footage of Cape Town’s coast, generating an influx of comments from South Africans living Down Under and back home.
While there were those who got involved in a heated debate over the current state of the city and country, many said the video – filmed by Capetonian local Luke Maximo Bell – reminded them that no matter how long they lived away from South Africa, it would always be home. As one said: “It’s been 16 years and I still call Cape Town home because it is.”
One of the top comments – of over 700 – came from Jan Hutton, former Chief Marketing Officer at SA Tourism who was involved in the blind man South African commercial.
Hutton, who recently relocated to the Gold Coast in Queensland, told Luke “this is exquisite work, amazing drone footage, smart angles, great spread of views… A masterpiece my friend (but as we’ve also all agreed, you had a spectacular canvas to start with…).”
The one-minute video was used in a promotional campaign for ‘The Australian’ and shared some stats about Cape Town – South Africa’s second most populated city with a population of 3.5 million, and home to one of the world’s oldest mountains (Table Mountain, which is 280 million years old). An Australian pilot who has spent a few weeks in SA encouraged his fellow countrymen to put Cape Town near the top of their bucket list.
One South African – referring to the plans for open-cast titanium mining on the Wild Coast by Perth-based Mineral Commodities Limited (MRC) – said: “Perhaps the Aussies should do one on our beautiful Wild Coast that they want to destroy with mining!”
Luke – who calls himself Maximo on his YouTube channel – wrote on the post: “I’m so glad that it made some people feel happy and proud about Cape Town.”
