Special Joburg Love for Mom and Daughter Enduring Hard Times

Radio presenter Anele and her team at 94.7 surprised Johannesburg teenager Lydia with “the best birthday surprise ever”.

Lydia’s family has struggled in recent years, since her dad was diagnosed with epilepsy a couple of years ago, and her mom is struggling as the sole breadwinner to support her three daughters and husband.

In a letter to the radio station, Lydia’s mom told of her daughter’s incredible support – both emotional (she says “don’t worry, one day we’re going to be fine… this is just a test”) and physical. Lydia has been cleaning her school’s classrooms and washing cars to earn extra money to ease her mother’s financial burden.

In one of the most heartbreaking moments on the show, fellow mom Natalie called in and said “from one South African family to another, we’d like to contribute R10,000 to assist the family with whatever they need – groceries or medicine…”

Lydia’s mom said, through tears, that she will use the money to buy food for her husband so that when he takes the medication “there’ll be something in his stomach”…
