Louzanne Coetzee, with her guide Erasmus Badenhorst, progressed to Monday’s final of the women’s 1500m (T11) at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics on Sunday.

She took 3.43 seconds off her previous best set at the 2017 World Championships. Coetzee had been DQ’d in the 1500m at Rio 2016 but stamped herself as a medal favourite here with an impressive display of front-running in the Olympic Stadium to win unchallenged in 4min 29.24sec.

In wheelchair tennis, Kgothatso Montjane and Mariska Venter lost to Great Britain’s No2 seeds Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley 6-2, 6-0, while Evans Maripa lost to No13 seed Daniel Vaverzaschi, of Spain, 6-2, 6-4.

Action on day five of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics was slightly quieter for Team SA on Sunday, with things confined to track athletics and wheelchair tennis.

ATHLETICS
Women’s 1500m (T11), heats: Louzanne Coetzee (guide Erasmus Badenhorst) won her heat in a person best 4min 49.24sec. She led all the way and stretched away from the field impressively in the last 400m. It was the second fastest qualifier ahead of Monday’s final

WHEELCHAIR TENNIS
Women’s doubles, quarter-finals: Kgothatso Montjane and Mariska Venter lost to Great Britain’s No2 seeds Lucy Shuker and Jordanne Whiley 6-2, 6-0
Men’s singles, second round: Evans Maripa lost to No13 seed Daniel Vaverzaschi, of Spain, 6-2, 6-4

ATHLETICS
Men’s 100m (T64), heats: Daniel du Plessis finished 7th in 11.72 and missed out on a place in the final
Men’s 100m (T64), heats: Mpumelelo Mhlongo finished third in his heat in a season’s best 11.06 and qualified 5th fastest for the final. In the same heat Tebogo Mofokeng finished 7th in his heat in an African record 11.40 but missed out on a place in the final
Men’s 100m (T63), heats: Puseletso Mabote finished 3rd in his heat in an African record 12.64 to qualify for the final
