South Africa’s team of athletes who participated in the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Australia, have truly made their country proud, says DA Shadow Minister of Sport & Recreation, Tsepo Mhlongo.
Team SA brought home no less than 37 medals, with the likes of Caster Semenya, Luvo Manyonga and Chad Le Clos outshining their international competitors in their respective codes.
Akani Simbine brought home South Africa’s first-ever gold medal in the 100m event, while Martin Erasmus clinched the country’s first wrestling gold medal in 60 years.
“Our athletes continue to fly our flag high and are consistently raising the bar in the global sports fraternity, despite receiving little institutional support here at home,” said Mhlongo, in a statement issued on Sunday.
“We reiterate our call to the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) to prioritise and provide greater support for our athletes, instil a sense of competitiveness and ensure good governance in sporting structures to encourage more athletes to work towards competing in international competitions.”
Deputy Minister of Sport, Gert Oosthuizen, said: “Tomorrow we say thank you for the hospitality, we made new friends and we shared time with old friends – time to go home????????”
And so it’s been another successful outing for @team_mzansi! In that spirit we are giving away another team kit.
