Edvald Boasson Hagen, riding for South Africa’s Team MTN Qhubeka, has secured the overall victory at the Aviva Tour of Britain today to become the 2015 Champion!
Team MTN Qhubeka announced the news on their Facebook page this evening saying “Woohoo” and “Eddy is the Boss!!! #BicyclesChangeLives.”
The 28-year-old Norwegian, who joined the South African-based team this season, is the first cyclist to win the event twice since its return in 2004 to the professional cycling calendar. He last won in 2009.
Edvald kept a 13-second lead over Wouter Poels from Britain’s Team Sky as they went into today’s 14-lap final stage through central London. The stage itself was actually won by Team Sky’s Elia Viviani (after a review of the finish relegated Andre Griepel). It was Elia’s third win in the race, but not enough to knock Edvald from the overall lead.
The eight-stage race began last Sunday from Beaumaris on Anglesey in Wales.
The win for Team MTN Qhubeka is sure to further boost the team’s #BicyclesChangeLives campaign…in which they aim to provide 5,000 bicycles to help South African students get to school and back. Currently half a million, of the 11-million who walk to school in SA, walk over an hour each way.
So far they have already raised enough for 4,118 bicycles!
