Wow! We knew millions of people loved Table Mountain…but we’re blown away by how many millions! Today – 20 January 2014 – the 24th millionth visitor stepped in to the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway to make her way to the top of South Africa’s legendary landmark.

The lucky lady was Maria Usenne (27) from Mozambique. She’s currently in the country on a two-week holiday with her husband of one year, Helvio, and like millions of others around the world, Table Mountain was on Maria’s Mother City bucket list. This was her first (magical and definitely unforgettable) trip up the mountain.

According to the Cableway’s official site, “the couple received a goodie box filled with Cableway merchandise and sweet treats from the Shop at the Top, free cable car tickets, a Table Mountain Café voucher and T-shirts. Maria also received a certificate stating her special visitor status.”

Table Mountain Aerial Cableway announced their exciting news today on Facebook.

“Winning this incredible prize and honour feels great! What an amazing surprise on our first visit to Cape Town and the Cableway. Thanks guys!” said an ecstatic Maria.

It has taken the Cableway a record-breaking one year to get from its 23rd millionth visitor last January (Thamsanqa Welcome Peter from Port Elizabeth) to its 24th millionth this month. That’s a million in one year!

It took the Cableway 28 years, from when it opened in 1929, to reach its first million mark in 1957! The previous record was last year’s which was 14 months.

Cableway Marketing manager Collette van Aswegen says “we are very excited to have reached 24-million visitors at the Cableway in such a short time. Here’s to many more millions of local and international guests.”
