Swift Cops Arrest 7 from Yesterday’s Cash-in-Transit Heist

Following a cash-in-transit (CIT) heist in Polokwane, South Africa, yesterday, seven suspects have been arrested… thanks to swift action by a multi-disciplinary team.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) said Tuesday morning that the operation to clinch the arrests was led by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit and supported by the Provincial Task Team, Tactical Response Team, Detective Services and Flying Squad.

“During the op, members recovered two stolen vehicles with false registration plates, ammo, cartridges, money bags and explosives,” said SAPS.

All suspects are to appear before Polokwane Magistrate Court on 30 May and are expected to face a myriad of charges. Investigations continue.

A manhunt was launched yesterday after the heist along the Matlala and Polokwane road in the Westernburg policing area.

SAPS reported: “The heavily armed suspects stormed a security vehicle transporting money and apparently shot at its wheels. The robbers took an undisclosed amount of money.

“Security officers who were transporting the money were taken to hospital for medical observation.”

It wasn’t the only heist in South Africa yesterday. Another took part in Centurion, south of Pretoria. (See below.)

Yesterday in Mpumalanga, SAPS reported its Operation Gijima Tsotsi has led to the arrest of 28 suspects so far.

The Operation is focussed on CIT heists, bank robberies and ATM bombings… which have become ‘popular’ in SA.

SAPS said the perpetrators of these crimes are “daring and always dangerously armed, which is a clear signal that they are ready to kill. Therefore, it is important for the community to work closely with the police by not confronting such villainous characters but to report them to the police who are mandated and capacitated to arrest criminals.”

Apart from the 28 arrests, police have also so far seized eight firearms including five AK 47s, two rifles and a 9mm pistol; and seven luxury vehicles which are believed to have been used during the crimes.
