It’s called Unseen, but the amazing new TV series from South Africa is being seen by millions of people. In fact, according to Netflix, the show has been viewed for over 17,5-million hours in the past fortnight.
It’s currently one of the Top 10 most popular Netflix shows in over 39 countries, and sitting proudly at number four on the global Top 10 list for the second week in a row.
Unseen is about a cleaning lady, Zenzile Mwale, who works for a rich Cape Town family… and a string of murders. Zenzi’s used to blending into the background. “But in Unseen, the newest crime thriller from South Africa, she’ll have to step out of the shadows in order to track down her missing husband,” says Netflix.
Contrary to rumours, the show is not based on a true story. It’s actually inspired by Fatma, a 2021 Netflix thriller from Turkey.
The brilliant team behind the production are the same SA team that brought teen drama Blood & Water to Netflix. Actress Gail Mabalane, who also starred in Blood & Water, plays Zenzi, the unassuming house cleaner.
In the opening moments of the six-part series, we discover that Zenzi, “timid as she may seem, is a murderer. Desperate to find her husband, who was just released from prison, she unexpectedly kills a local crime boss, setting gangsters on her trail. To stay alive and out of prison, Zenzi is forced to kill again as she continues to search for her missing husband, uncovering a massive conspiracy involving a corrupt bank and some very powerful people in the process.”
The show is set in present day Cape Town.
