South African tennis player Raven Klaasen and his doubles partner, New Zealand’s Michael Venus, are through to the Finals of the Washington Open in the USA.

The determined duo knocked out Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo in two sets – 6-2, 7-6 – in the semi-finals at the ATP 500 tournament in Washington DC.

It’s been an exciting journey for Klaasen and Venus who came so close to being knocked out in the quarters by Britain’s Andy Murray and his brother Jamie… but the third seeds managed to snatch the match away from the Brits in an hour and 52 minutes of playing their hearts out (including coming back from a set down and saving a match point!), finally winning 6-7 (3) 7-6 (6) 10-7.

Cape Town-born Klaasen and Venus will now face Jean-Julien Rojer (Netherlands) and Horia Tecau (Romania) in the Final!

Meanwhile South African wheelchair tennis player Lucas Sithole has also set up a final showdown across the Atlantic, at the Belgian Open.

Sithole – who lost his legs and right arm in a train accident in 1998 – beat Australian Heath Davidson 6-4, 7-5 on Saturday. The two-time grand slam champion will face world number 5 Sam Schroder (Netherlands) in the Final. “Good going champ!” said TSA.
