Johannesburg runner Gerda Steyn today finished the New York City Marathon in a time of 2:27:48, just inside the Olympic qualifying time of 2:29:30.
At the Comrades Marathon earlier this year, Steyn ran a time of 5:58:53, smashing the up run record by over 10 minutes faster than the 6:09:23 clocked by Iena Nurgalieva in 2004.
A fellow runner in New York said on Twitter that he heard the announcer say in the background as Steyn crossed the finish line, “It’s been a great sporting weekend for the nation of South Africa.”
At another popular marathon today, the Soweto Marathon or the People’s Race, mother of two Irnette van Zyl won the race for the third consecutive year with a time of 2:33:43.
