Commonwealth Games champion Akani Simbine showed he is in fine fettle ahead of the Birmingham showpiece when he raced to victory in the 100m at the Stockholm Diamond League meeting on Thursday night.
The South African athlete picked up his first big win of the season with a 10.02sec victory, after Olympic champion Lamont Marcell Jacobs pulled out a few hours before the race.
The 28-year-old, who was fourth behind Jacobs at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, won his race comfortably, seeing off Britain’s Reece Prescod (10.15) and France’s Jimmy Vicaut (10.19).
There were two other athletes in action for Team SA. Sokwakhana Zazini finished eighth in the 400m hurdles in 49.8 and Prudence Sekgodiso dipped under the 2min barrier in the 800m when she timed 1:59.52 for sixth place behind Kenya’s Mary Moraa.
