A Good Samaritan in Johannesburg has enlisted the help of social media users to track down the owner of a wedding (or engagement) ring, which she found in Sandton City, South Africa.

The ring which Cheyenne Grobler found in Sandton City. Only the rightful owner will be able to identify it. 

Cheyenne Grobler (24) posted a message on Friday evening saying: “Found a ring in the bathroom by the food court in sandton city… I know it seems like a small thing, but it means something to someone… just trying to find the owner.”

Her post has already had over 12,000 shares… and so far a couple of people have tried to claim it – but they haven’t been able to identify it specifically.

“There is a very fine detail that the picture does not show that only the owner would know of,” says Cheyenne.

One woman on Facebook said it looked just like her wedding ring… but that hers was safely tucked away in her safe.

Another said it looked like her ring which she lost at a pub in Soweto in September. She said she wasn’t interested in finding out if it was her ring because “I trashed everything that my guy gave me with the ring for closure. And this just opened an old wound.”

Cheyenne, who was at Sandton City with a friend, told Times Live: “At around 1pm we went to the bathroom and I saw the ring on top of a toilet paper holder. I took it and immediately ran to chase the owner with no luck. I went to the information desk and asked around but no one knew anything or saw the owner.”

She hopes it wasn’t an international tourist who may have left SA by now.

Whatever happens, she says she will hold onto the ring until she finds the rightful owner. She told Times Live:

I do hope that the post reaches enough people so the owner can be found. I will keep it for however long I need to. I will never sell nor give it away because it does not belong to me.

Cheyenne confirmed with SAPeople on Wednesday night that the ring’s owner has still not been found.

“Not yet unfortunately… I will keep everyone posted when I do find the owner?,” she promises.
