Joburg Student, 1st Ever to Graduate in His Family, Gets Masters from Harvard Law School

South African student Tshidiso Ramogale is being celebrated on social media for his awesome achievement – obtaining a Master’s Degree from Harvard Law School. The humble graduate is meanwhile celebrating his family and friends who “carried” him all the way.

According to a post on Wednesday by Olgar’s Auto Nigel, Tshidiso said: “Graduated! First in my family to graduate from university, first professional in my family and now the first to hold a Master’s degree.

“I may be the first, but I certainly won’t be the last.

“I am here not by my own strength but through the collective strength of the people who have helped carry me thus far – my mother, my sister, my family and friends. From the depths of my heart, THANK YOU for finding me worthy enough to be loved. You are all instruments of God’s continued presence in my life. I hope I have not failed you.”

According to the Harvard website, Tshidiso is a human rights lawyer and social entrepreneur from Johannesburg, who already holds a law degree from Wits.

Before heading off to Harvard, Tshidiso was a legal officer at the South African Human Rights Commission and a law clerk to the Honourable Justice Sisi Khampepe of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.

“His expansive human rights work spans from securing the release of persons unlawfully arrested and detained by the police, to preventing unlawful evictions, and protecting the rights of the elderly and disabled,” says the site.

Tshidiso is also the founder of a non-profit organization, Change SA, which has a mission to transform young South Africans into social entrepreneurs. Being a social entrepreneur himself, he is also an Allan Gray Fellow (a community of high impact social entrepreneurs from sub-Saharan Africa).

South Africans are applauding his achievement, with ‘Suits’ fans pointing out that he’s now become one of the rare few who can legitimately apply at Pearson Specter Litt law firm!
