South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa visited Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu on Thursday to apologise for the period in which the Archbishop “lost confidence in the leadership of the country” (during the presidency of Jacob Zuma).
Ramaphosa said: “It was not a pleasant moment to hear you, the Archbisohop who we’ve always loved, expressing your loss of confidence and of hope. I am sorry we put you through that. But we will work very hard to regain your confidence and make you proud.”
Overwhelmed with joy at the visit to his home in Hermanus, Tutu was near to tears at times.
He said: “This must not be a false dawn. It looks to us like we on our way to becoming what we were intended to be… and we give great thanks to God for you, and uphold you and your colleagues…”
Tutu said he prays for Ramaphosa’s family and colleagues, and said: “You’ve got to succeed. Failure is not an option.”
Ramaphosa said his apology was on behalf of the National Executive Committee.
Also present today was Tutu’s wife Leah and their eldest daughter, Thandeka, and son-in-law Mthunzi Gxashe. Ramaphosa was accompanied by Ebrahim Rasool, Faiez Jacobs and Zizi Kodwa.
NEC Member, Kodwa, said the ANC is currently on a ‘revolutionary pilgrimage’, meeting with those people or organisations who played an outstanding role during the liberation of South Africa.
