PRETORIA – South Africa’s population is estimated at 55.91 million, Statistician General Pali Lehohla said on Thursday; and over half of those – 51 percent – are women… and they’re likely to live over five years longer than their men.
Other interesting stats released today in the 2016 Mid-Year Population Estimates for South Africa include:
- South Africa’s population grew by 1.62% between 2015 and 2016, which is a slower rate than previous years.
- Four out of every five South Africans are black Africans (81%… which is 45.11 million people).
- The white population is estimated at 4.52 million, while the coloured population is estimated 4.9 million with the Indian/Asian population at 1.39 million.
- Gauteng is the most populated province (13.5 million), followed by KwaZulu-Natal (11.1 million).
- The Northern Cape is home to the fewest people (1.17 million)
- There are more women than men (51% – 28.53 million).
Estimates by age
- 30.1% of the population is under the age of 15 years.
- about 8% (4.42 million) are 60 years or older.
- KZN has the most children (3.86 million), followed by Gauteng (3.43 million).
Lehohla said the 15-34 year-old population is largely uneducated and “are in difficult situations and are likely to be in poverty.”
HIV prevalence
- Over 7 million people are living with HIV! That’s 13 in every 100 people.
- The estimated HIV prevalence rate is approximately 12.7%.
- The good news is that among the youth, HIV prevalence in the 15 to 24 age group has declined from 7.6% in 2002 to 5.6 % in 2016.
Fertility
- Fertility has declined in South Africa.
- On average, a South African woman will give birth to 2.43 children in her lifetime. This figure was 2.65 in 2002.
- The lowest fertility rates (below national average) are in the Northern Cape, Gauteng and the Western Cape provinces.
Life Expectancy
- South Africans are likely to live, on average, to 62.4 years.
- The life expectancy of a child born in 2016 is approximately 59.7 years for males and 65.1 years for females.
- The infant mortality rate for 2016 is estimated at 33.7 per 1 000 live births.
Migration
A lot of people seem to be leaving Limpopo! For the period of 2011 to 2016, it is estimated that approximately 247,437 people will have migrated out of the Eastern Cape, while Limpopo is estimated to experience an out-migration of nearly 305,030 people.
