A kind newspaper vendor in Durbanville is making news on social media today for his thoughtful actions that have touched many, and reminded everyone of the beautiful, warm-hearted people who seldom make the news… but who make South Africa great!
The photo was sent to SAPeople this morning by Tess Rodriguez, from ‘Property Factor‘ in Durbanville, Western Cape.
“This is my suburb, my Africa!” said Teas. “Every morning a blind lady, who may work at Durbanville Municipality, and her dog battle to cross the busy Main Road intersection. And every morning, the newspaper vendor at that intersection, grabs her arm and helps her cross the street. Much RESPECT!!!”
It was later posted by Durbanville Community, and has since received over 1,000 likes with many wanting to know more about the kind vendor.
Local resident Mandy de Koker says his name is Desmond and he delivers the newspaper daily to her business in Queen Street. She’s says he’s “very kind and friendly” and she’ll let him know on Monday about the appreciation shown for his good deeds.
Although the robots at that intersection do have ‘beepers’ for the blind when the green pedestrian light is on, it’s always nerve-wracking being unsure whether cars will stop on time or jump the light; and sometimes the beepers are dysfunctional… so a guiding hand across the road is always welcome.
And Desmond isn’t the only kind-hearted individual in the area. Another local, Liz Parkins, revealed that on Friday, “I saw a lady get out of her car and help the blind lady across the road. Bless her and the newspaper vendor. An act of kindness never goes unseen…”
Vanessa Macfarlane said “Lovely to see there are still people out there prepared to do something for someone else” and Jo Wessels added: “Angels appear in many forms… Desmond thank you for reminding us.”
