On World Teachers Day (5 October 2017), meet an inspiring South African teacher living abroad – Rodwell Chigome. You may have seen the video where he not only taught his class in Vietnam the SA National Anthem, but taught them to sing it with PASSION!
And now Rodwell’s in the United Arab Emirates teaching for the Ministry of Education and imparting that same passion to the students there. And when he’s not teaching… he’s exploring the world, flying the South African flag and inspiring his students and friends back home in SA.
The 30-year-old “blackpacker” (as he calls himself) loves travelling… and is on a mission to see all New 7 Wonders of the World. So far he’s six down. One to go – Mexico. (He plans to visit the ancient city of Chichén Itza next year.)
“I’m just trying to be the best possible me and, God willing, inspire a few peeps along the way… especially black folk, who for some reason believe they are not meant to or allowed to travel! Obviously suppression of the past might play a role in that,” Rodwell told SAPeople.
He says he was inspired to travel the world when he was at University (Stellenbosch) and stumbled across the programme ‘An Idiot Abroad‘.
“I was like, if an idiot can do it, why not me? I will sleep when I’m dead.”
Until then he’ll continue travelling, inspiring and flying the flag for SA from all corners of the world.
“Being an ambassador for South Africa is an absolute treat,” says the Proudly South African Expat!
